Coping with Stress In Management<br />
Accepting more responsibility at the office often indicates that one is put under more stress, and this is what happens as you advance into a management role. You will not succeed as a manager unless you can cope with stress, and if this is your first job managing others it would be odd if you didn‘t find it difficult at first. It is not just pressure from the employees in your team but also other individuals that may be in higher management roles who you are answerable to. An essential skill for success as a manager in the longer term is to stay unflustered and develop the ability to lead and prosper in such an environment.

A key skill that you should strive to excel at early on is result-focused planning, while targeting the important tasks that require attention from you. A key element in perfecting this is the ability to delegate and allow your team to do the work while you are freed up to manage them and their work attentively. Consequently, you need to strike a balance between helping your staff members as well as making it clear when you do not want to be disrupted. You might have to educate your staff to your thinking on this matter, and also call on more experienced and senior team members to offer help where they could.

Part of a manager‘s lot is that sometimes decisions have to be made which your team may not like, no matter that these may be forced by factors you don‘t control. This could mean you being modern psychotherapy called on to handle situations with upset staff members, which initially can be difficult. The simplest way to address these situations is to be open and straightforward, and to accept from the outset that not all decisions will be popular and you can‘t change that. Especially with issues of conflict, it is advisable to reach resolution as quickly as possible and move on, leaving behind any harsh exchanges that may occurred.

If too large a portion of your day is spent working, this might be a sign that you are not planning your day well, or that you are accepting just too many tasks. Work smarter, not harder, is a lesson you should learn to be successful and lessen the stress of your job. Conscientiously plugging away behind your workspace is also a misconstrued virtue - it is good to get away occasionally. If you find that you are not making progress, it could well be time to speak with a more senior or experienced co-worker. Their more extensive experience might guide you to a solution and equip you to deal with recurrences of a similar problem or situation.

Stress is a manager‘s companion, but rather than weigh you down it can turn out to be a friend in your development, provided that you make sure to ask for assistance when you need it and if you pay attention to the important things.
